all about asteroids

ASTEROIDS -by rhea aurora

1.Asteroids are chunks of space rock which are leftovers from the nebula(the birth of stars).

2.Asteroids don't just float around in space, most of them are orbiting the sun in a huge ring in between Mars and Jupiter's orbit.this is called the asteroid belt.

3.The name 'Asteroid' is the Greek word for star like.asteroids can also be called minor planets or planetoids (planet like).

4.The largest asteroid ever found so far is called Ceres , it has a 1000km diameter .Most asteroids are usually around 100km. the smallest asteroid is 1993Ka2,it is barely 5m across!

FUN FACTS!

1. Some asteroids orbit other asteroids!
2. Some asteroids have there own moons
3. If all the asteroids in our solar system were put together it would be less than a third of the moon!(1/3)
4. The weight of all the asteroids in the solar system would be 1000 times less than earth!
5. The 2 moons of mars , Deimos and Phobos are not round like our moon ,they are more like baked potatos! People think they may be asteroids trapped in mars' power!

Senior Indus Day

When I came to the Senior Indus Day I was very nervous (not that I was in it), but the fact to see and wait which house would win. There were 3 categories: dance, drama, and singing. The winner of the dance was Orion!!, the winner of the drama was Orion!!, the winner of singing was Orion!!, and finally they announced the winner of inter house.....I was very nervous and the winner was............ORION!!!!!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!

WHAT I LEARNT ABOUT SPACE

In our current UOI topic "The Final Frontier" I learnt many interesting facts about space, which are:

1. I learnt about all the planets (including their diameter, order from the sun, how big they are, interesting features etc.)
2. I also learnt that if cockroaches go up into space and breed the baby will become a different color than there parents because of the lack of gravity.
3. Another fact I learnt is that even though Mercury is closer to the sun than Venus, Venus is still hotter because Venus has clouds that trap the heat inside them.
4. I also learnt that "Sputnik 1" wasn't the first thing to go into space, it was actually a small rocket that wasn't meant to go into space which was about 40-50 years before "Sputnik 1".
5. I also learnt about black holes (how big they can become, what kinds of black holes exist, what is the cause of a black hole etc.)
6. Another thing I learnt was asteroids (how big they can become, what they are made out of etc.)
7. Another thing I learnt about is meteoroids (how big they can become, other names for meteoroids, that once they hit a planet's surface they are known as meteorites etc.)
8. I learnt about the 1st people to go up into space.
9. I learnt about Neil Armstrong and his crew and there trip as the 1st people to walk on the moon.
10. I learnt about our moon and its looks in the sky.
11. I learnt that there was water found on Mars and that there might be life (or had life) on Mars.
12. I learnt that there is an asteroid that was supposed to hit Mars but it missed so it might crash into Earth soon (I'm scared!)
13. I learnt that they sent a probe to land on Mars' ice caps and will see if the water is healthy enough for life.
14. I learnt that India is going to send a satellite "Chandrayaan" (which means Lunar Vehicle in Hindi) to orbit the moon and eventually crash onto its surface.
15. I learnt that China is going to send something called "Chang 1" into space.
16. I learnt that if you weigh 100kg on Earth that you will weigh 106.4kg on Saturn.
17. Another thing I learnt is disasters that occurred in space such as: Apollo 1, Columbia etc.
18. Another thing I learnt is Saturn's atmosphere, Saturn's gases, which god Saturn is named after etc.
19. I learnt that Saturn has 7 main rings and that they can be 20 metres thick.
20. I leant that Mars' 2 moons are actually asteroids cought in its gravitational pull.
21. I learnt that Pluto isn't a planet anymore, but it is actually a dwarf planet.
22. I learnt that "Sputnik 1" was actually 2 inches tall!
23. And I learnt that space shutles can be used more than once unlike rockets.

indus day

when indus day finally came everyone was excited and nervous . we had not taken our practices very seriously .they were very tiring ,boring and you never looked forward to it . it was worth it we put up a fantastic show which everyone loved ! i was in the musical joseph and his amazing multi coulered dream coat the other shows were things like yoga dance and spanish song etc. we put up a pretty good show before preperations were fun we got free popocorn !

Indus Day

It was finally 14 December,2007 which was Indus day. After the endless practices I thought we were ready for our play. When everyone reached school we all changed into our costumes. We had to wait in a long cue for getting our make up done. Everyone looked different. Finally it was 10 minutes till we had to go. I was very nervous. When we got on stage and started acting it felt it was just like practice. We all did an excellent show. I enjoyed it alot.

the grade 5 fete

on thursday the 6th of december grade 5 had a fete we got into groups & made and/or bought things to sell at the fete . my group was me , ruchi & ana . our stall was called the paradise fun stall . many people from the pyp , 6th grade boarders & 12th graders bought from our stall . we ran a very good buisness ! ana , ruchi & i made a grand total of aroun rs. 2,900! we were selling all kinds of things in our group .

we had become entrepreneurs !!!!! it was fun and exciting but it was very hard work that 1 hour that we ran our stalls was hard work . we were exhausted ! i am glad that all this money is going to charity we made around rs. 32,000 all together and everyone was happy . i really enjoyed this activity .

The grade 5 Mini Fete

On 6th December grade 5 did a mini fete. We bought things and sold things in small stalls. We used the skills we learned in our topic,"Let's talk Business".

Some of the things we learned are: Cost price, Selling price, Profit, and Profit&Loss %. I think EVERYBODY made at least Rs.1,000. My group collected Rs.2,580.

First, we had to think of a business plan. Then, we had to buy all the things we were going to sell. It was very stressful the couple of days before the fete. Mrs.Poonam made us work on our charts and all the whole day. he gave no homework except to prepare, BIG TIME!!!!! There was no time to relax. After that was the BIG DAY!!!!!!! We learned a lot and had a lot of FUN! I had loads of fun and I think everyone thinks the same.
