In my Opinion A Hero Is ...........

In my opinion heroes are people who care for others.
Heroes like Anne Frank are hopeful, the ones like Pocahontas are kind and brave, the ones like Jesus Christ are caring and brave, the ones like Mother Teresa are very caring.

During the days of the Romans, a hero was a person who fought with their enemies and won in battles, and have lots of muscles. But now a true hero isn’t like the ones in the Romans days. These days true heroes don’t fight battles and may not necessarily have muscle power. For example Mahatma Gandhi who was a lean and short man, but could with his determination and mental strength win freedom for his country.

Heroes don’t work to be a hero. They just do what they want to do.

Heroes like Super Man, Spider Man etc, are fake heroes. The computer only makes these. For example if Spider Man jumps from a top building which is about 50 m, in reality he is jumping only about half m.

True heroes are people who do things for someone else. They are doing some good things for others, just by love of doing it and not for money. But fake heroes are working for money.
And did you know, even fire fighters, doctors, polices are heroes? It’s because they are saving people.
A hero doesn’t really care if other people call her/him a hero or not. All they want to do is to make people happy around them.
For example Mother Teresa, Jesus Christ, Pocahontas, Helen Keller, Anne Frank, Diana princess of whales etc, are all heroes because they did a great job of doing something for other people and making a differents in the live of other people. Take Mother Teresa for example, she took the poor children who don’t have their families and took care of them. What a great shero!!!!

A VISIT TO THE SOS VILLAGE

On Tuesday,29th May,Grade 4 along with our teacher Ms. Poonam ,Mr. Bhowmik , the school nurse and two parents -Mrs. Dipa Padmakumar and Mrs. Anita Nathwani visited the SOS village.

SOS stands for Save Our Souls. SOS Village was founded in 1964 in Delhi by Dr Japan Nat Kabul. This is in line with the SOS Village in Austria. More than 2 lakhs children in India get help from SOS. In cases of natural disasters SOS comes to the immediate rescue of the kids. During the 2004 Tsunami they opened temporary shelters to aid affected kids.

When we arrived at SOS on Bannarghatta Road, we were greeted by Mr. Ragavendra & Mr. Shashi Kumar. They sat us down and filled us in with all the information about The Village.

There are 252 kids in The Village. They house kids from the age of 3 mts to 22 yrs. Once they even got a 3 day old baby. They have an in-house nurse and a doctor that visits once a week. There are 16 houses .14 of them are Hindu houses and one is Muslim & the other is a Christian house. Each house has 5 bedrooms a living room & a kitchen. Each house has 10 to 12 kids and also a mother. This mother cooks for them, helps them with home work & does everything a biological mother would do. All the kids in a house grow up like brothers & sisters. All the kids we saw were very happy & healthy.

These orphans are brought to The Village by relatives who cannot take care of them. The Village adopts these kids. The relatives have to sign a no-objection contract. Then they can visit the kids every 3 months. But the kids are no longer under their control. The Village holds all legal rights. The kids are counseled before they are accepted in The Village. They do not house disabled kids.

The kids attend Pre- primary within the village. After that they go to schools outside. They have kids going to 34 different schools in Jayanagar & JP nagar. All kids follow different curriculum depending on their capability. They have kids doing MBBS & engineering too. Kids who excel in any form of art are allowed to take lessons.

All these orphans have found a home away from home. The Village has given them the care & nurturing which would have been given to them by their parents. These kids have got themselves a good future in this Village.

In My Opinion A Hero Is….

In my opinion a hero is determined and inspires you. He does things for others. Heroes are caring and risk-takers.

One person I know is who is determined is Kalpana Chawala. From a very small town to space. She was determined because she never gave up. She always kept on trying. If at first she did not succeed she tried and tried again. Heroes are also people like Marie Curie who help others and not just think about themselves. She was born poor but she still worked with radio active elements even though it was bad for her health. She found a cure from a deadly disease called cancer to help those suffering even though she didn’t have the disease herself.

Some people think Shah Rukh Khan and Spiderman are true heroes but they are just famous. They do what they do just for money. I think they are just actors.

Heroes are caring like Mother Teresa was. She was caring, a risk-taker, brave, and determined. Mother Teresa helped people who had leprosy and who we would not even touch. Heroes are people who inspire others. A hero is someone who is a risk-taker like Jim Corbett. He captured man eating tigers even though they didn’t harm him but harmed others. People everyday are also heroes like firefighters and police. They risk there lives to help others.

In olden days people used to think that if you were strong and could lead the army you were a hero. But today Mother Teresa is not a hero because she is strong. In those they used to say wow they are so brave. If you think someone is brave it does not mean they are physically fit you could be mentally fit like Anne Frank. She had to live in one house for 2 years she never gave up hope. She would always think tomorrow will be a better day.

What is the difference between being famous from being a hero?

Lately most our HEROES are spider man etc.
, but heroes aren’t just famous people and I am 100% correct heroes don’t work for money!

Heroes are heroes if they have done some thing great. They have gone out of their way to help others and forget about themselves.

I think people should tell kids who is a famous person and who is a hero or else everybody will think actors like Rithik Roshan is a hero.

Orville Wright

Orville Wright was born on August 19th, 1871 in Dayton Ohio. He had a brother named Wilbur who was 4 years older than him. His parent’s names were Bishop and Catharine Wright. Since Orville was a kid he was a great biker. The first thing that the two brothers made was a sled. All of their friend’s dads made sleds for them but the two brother’s dad was on a trip. One day they told their mom about this and their mom drew a picture and the boys made the sled. This taught the boys that they always should draw a picture before making something and if there picture is wrong the invention is wrong. One day the brother’s dad brought home a toy helicopter. This toy inspired the Wright brothers first interest in flight. One day in 1881 Orville’s family moved to Richmond, Indiana. In Richmond Orville picked up how to build kites. He kept on using the drawing strategy his mother taught him. In 1884 the moved back to Dayton and since Orville was such a good biker they started a bike shop. Orville participated in bike races too. This is how they got there money. One day they got inspired in flying again they went to the sand dunes in North Carolina and made a glider. When they told people about this everyone thought that they were crazy. Then they added an engine to it and showed everyone that they could fly. Orville flew it. They were the first men to fly and became famous.

I think that both Orville and Wilbur are both heroes because they made the first flying machine and without them we would have to use car and boat and that would take days and days and days on end.

WORLD PEACE

Our world has seen many wars over many years. We should have peace. To achieve peace we need to know what war is, who starts them, and what are the damages.

People start wars when they want more land, water, oil, and other natural resources. For example Israel and Palestine are fighting over the land that Israel is on. Sometimes people and countries are angry, emotional, or have disagreements and want to teach others a lesson. For example in Africa Ethiopia and Eretria have fought and are fighting a war of independence, also India and Pakistan have fought many wars over land and anger. People have beliefs and opinions which can cause one nation to believe that they are right and others are wrong or that they have a better race than others. In World War II Hitler (German dictator) thought Germans were the best race in the world. Therefore he wanted Germany to rule over Europe and the World. Dictators want more power, money, and attention. They start wars to get these. Today many countries are ruled by dictators, for example North Korea, Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and many more.

Wars have many ill effects. Wars kill people and their families. It injures people for life. For example people become blind, skin burnt, arm or leg missing and much more. Many soldiers become paranoid, depressed, and have mental illness. This causes their families to suffer also. Cities are destroyed and polluted. There is also shortage of food, water, and electricity. Many people want to run away from war. War creates many refugees. For example in the India-Pakistan partition there were a million refugees. There is no transportation in or out of the city or country. Many orphans are created. Families lose contact or are broken up due to war. War is bad but it is terrible for children. Children need world peace to grow up.

To achieve world peace we should have an organization for the world. We should create a place where when countries disagree they can talk it out. For example if India and Pakistan have disagreements then they could talk it out over there. The world has created a place like that called the “United Nations” after World War II. The United Nations is also called the UN. The UN provides a place for Countries to tell everyone what they disagree about. The UN is formed from all the countries of the world where the most powerful of the countries like United States, Europe, Japan, Russia, China and India have to protect the weaker nations from being invaded by other stronger nations. The stronger nations have to protect the weak and only then can we have global peace. But sometimes the stronger nation allows its best friends to start wars and that is not good.

Countries should be sent to a world judge who decides whether one country is right or the other. The UN provides such a world judge in the form of the World Court.

Also when two countries exchange goods and trade they do not fight. Therefore the world organization should also provide ways in which poor countries can develop more goods and trade and become rich. When people have enough food, water, electricity, education and a good life they do not fight. Our government should provide this to us. The stronger nations should also help provide these to poorer nations so that the poor nation does not need to go to war to get these. For example India should help Pakistan become richer so that Pakistan and India do not fight as often.

People should get their government to act. People should get to know the world news. Countries need to provide news reporters who can report news as telling the truth without worrying about going to jail. This is called free press. For example WE and India have free press and we can get the news on TV, radio, computer when we want and about what we want. For example Hitler didn’t include that he was going to kill the Jews so that none of the Germans could stop him from killing them. Children should be taught in schools about “Human Rights” because if they know what is happening in the world they can do something about it.

People should be worried about wars going on between their neighbor countries and ask their government to solve it. For example if Bangladesh and Pakistan are fighting should India worry? Yes because many refugees will be coming into the country to seek shelter. There is not enough food and water to feed everyone. So India should help stop the war.

People should also force their government to be democracies. Because in a democracy the power is with the people and if people do not like the government then we can vote them out in the next 5 years. Most democracies do not fight between each other.

We should help after the wars by helping orphans. Builders can help by building cities. We should supply food, water, money, clothes, homes, and medicine. The government should help people unite with their families and help peoples who lost family in the war. We should act the way America acted by giving aid to Europe and Japan after World War II.

In summary, to have World Peace first we need to understand what causes wars and then need government and people of the world to act to prevent war and create business.

Global Peace

As we speak the world has many problems. Wars, hunger and poverty amongst other things go on and on. Our topic today is how to bring global peace to our planet. Lets talk in detail about the problems that are preventing world peace.

WARS: There are many kinds of conflicts. The worst type is armed conflicts. (Wars with weapon such as guns and bombs). Us global citizens get into fights easily and often use armed conflicts. Some countries go even as far as using nuclear weapons, which can destroy thousands of innocent lives. A single conflict can make a huge war.

RELIGION: Many people fight for their religion. This is very sad because many people die as a result of worthless fighting. People use their religion to use force and fight against other religions or countries. For example, Israel and Palestine (Jews and Muslims) have been fighting for a long time. Many innocent people are killed. Religion also creates religious fanatics and people become what we call “terrorists”. A terrorist kills many people like soldiers. However unlike the soldier he/she kill unarmed and helpless citizens who cannot fight back. Their targets are places like urban buildings and public transport systems.

GREED AND POWER: Some large developed countries such as United States and Great Britain take over smaller countries like Iraq because the smaller countries do not have large defense systems and can thus be easily defeated. The larger countries take over the country’s government and rich natural resources and become more powerful. For example the United States took over Iraq and killed its ruler Saddam Hussein. At the present moment in Iraq it’s a big muddle with everyone fighting each other and no one really ruling the country. The US army is there to curb the violence however this fighting seems to go one without any signs of peace. Day by day with more bombings Iraq’s infrastructure is getting from bad to worse.

NATURAL CATASTROPHE / DISASTER: There are lots of natural disasters in this world. Tsunamis, floods, droughts, famines and many more. These unwanted catastrophes cause people to lose a lot of their belongings and they become poor overnight. This leads to anger, frustration and aggression. For example the everlasting drought in Ethiopia or the Tsunami disaster in South East Asia has caused many people to lose their lives and the survivors live as refugees.

POVERTY: There is lots of poverty in this world. For example in my recent trip to Bombay, I saw thousands of tiny and scruffy little homes made of tin and mud where many poor families live. Its unfortunate that these little homes have no bathrooms but provide only shelter from bad weather. These homes are called slums. Poverty creates death and disease. It also creates fights and robbery because of hunger, frustration and anger.

SOME SOLUTIONS:

All these problems are so very sad and unfortunate and we must together do something to make this world a better place. For some of the problems above we must seek help of the United Nations before its too late. Rulers of countries should stick to ruling their own country instead of taking over others. Instead of raging independent wars we must consult with the United Nations. Terrorists must be brought to justice by being given the highest punishment. The rich should make more donations to the poor and help change a few lives in their own special way. Giving time towards charity (community service) can be very rewarding and makes a big difference. We can also try to talk our conflicts out instead of fighting. It’s much easier and saves many lives. When natural disasters happen we should feel empathy and volunteer our time to the affected areas. We should also donate old clothes, money and food to these areas or go through the Red Cross.

These are a few ways that we can make this world a much better place to live in. So lets get to work and do what we can.

The Difference Between Being Famous and Being a Hero

There is often confusion about people who are heroes and people who are famous. Many times people are considered heroes .However this may not always be true. I want to tell you some of the differences between being a hero and being famous.

People become famousbecause they are constantly doing something that the public notices. For example ,famous people can be found in the fireld of acting, movie making ,music, painting or in politics. Their work gets noticed . But they are not all heroes. Some famous people can be heroes just like some heroes can become famous. Being money. Famous people are people who act or sing or do something for money.

Heroes are people who perform acts that help other people and do not expect any reward. Heroes aren't supermen but they aren't just Mahatama Gandhi and George Washington or Mother Teresa. Firefighters and police are everyday heroes who aren't famous but they work hard and save lives. They also risk their lives . Mahatama Gandhi fought for freedom without violence.George Washington also fought for his country. Mother Teresa helped the poorest of the poor. Martin Luther King Junior also used non violence to get freedom for the black people in America and he turned into a famous hero. Abhilasha ,in clas said, Shakespeare was a hero because he brought happiness through a book. I think she is right and I think all authors are heroes.

If famous people were heores wouldn't everyone be? Cartoon characters aren't heoes either . Heroes are willing to give their lives for other people who rely on them . They are also brave , smart and real. Heroes do not wear fancy clothing in real life. Sometimes heroes get rewards like certificates.

Who would you rather be? Famous or a real Hero?

Hero Or Just Famous ?

Yesterday we started our new topic -Heroes and Sheroes and my assignment was to write the difference between being famous and being a hero.

I think that a true hero is not just doing things for him self but feeling and doing things for others.
For example: Mother Teresa

Ms Poonam showed us a movie about her and after watching, it made me feel really sad about the poor people and happy about how they feel when someone visits them.

I think by doing what she did for all those people ,Mother Teresa is a true shero.

Some people like Spiderman who we think are heroes are actually not but are just famous.

So I think a hero is a person who shows respect, care and love for others .

How does Indus get its water

The best part about this topic was going around school and finding out how and where from Indus gets its water and where the used water goes and how it is used .

I was shocked when Ms. Poonam told how much water Indus uses each day.
We were told how much each block and area uses and we added it up using calculators and

found the total to be 12,55,000 litres per day! Shocking .Isn't

it ?

When there are people who don't even get to use 20 litres a day.

I enjoyed the role play too. It was fun.

When Ms.Poonam showed us pictures of people craving for a few litres of water., I felt like bursting into tears. I then relized how important saving water was. When I asked my dad how much we pay for water. When my dad told me that we hardly paid anything ,I was shocked. People on the road pay most of their salary to get 1 liter of water while we get 24 hours of water and pay nothing. Everyday when I told my parents what I learned they were shocked. I did research for the first time using the Big 6. I enjoyed this topic. It made me realize I should not waste water. After this topic I think I became knowleadgeble.

Reflections

When we started the topic 'Water' I thought it would be so boring because we were going to learn about how much water there is in the ocean. But then I discoverd that we were learning about how much water we are getting. It touched my heart when I heard a child is dying every 15 seconds because they are drinking dirty water. Then I checked how much water I used a day. I figured out I use 577l a day. I was so surprised. The poor people don't even get 20l a day. I was so hurt.

New UOI Topic - HEROES and SHEROES

Grade 4 are in the process of beginning our new unit of inquiry titled Heroes and Sheroes . We have already discussed the difference between being famous and being a hero. We made a good beginning by watching the movie on the life of Mother Teresa and my students were really touched by the condition of the thousands of homeless and sick, children and elderly who were and are continually being helped by the Missionaries of Charity.

One of the great things about this unit is that not only will the students of my class learn to respect and appreciate great men and women of the past and present times but will understand that they have a responsibility to support others in the community and that they too can strive to make a difference in the lives of others and become heroes and sheroes.

I hope to achieve ,by the end of this unit , one of the principal goals of the IBPYP which is to DEVELOP IN STUDENTS THE CAPACITY TO FUNCTION AS CARING AND RESPONSIBLE INTERNATIONAL CITIZENS.

Water is not used equally by all people

I've learnt that so many people don't have 1 litre to drink every day and that some people are wasting so much water. I was shocked that on this earth 97% is sea water that we can't use and only 3% fresh water and most of this is locked up in glaciers.
I learnt that each person needs to use at least 20 litres everyday. But on earth the water is not given equally so some people send their children not to school, but to get up at about 5:30 a.m and send them to walk about 3km just to get 1 or 2 litres of water. And in some rich countries like USA , each person got more than 100 litres to use every day, around 380 l per person per day.

And 2 countries -Canada and Italy one person uses around 300 l every day.

We need to save water . If we don't our future generations are all going to die because they won't have enough water .

Where our water comes from and where it goes

It was shocking to hear an see that people have to get up at about 4:30 a.m to fetch water. Children have to get up so early. I bet these children have never been to school . I believe that people have to carry water in mud pots.
My brothers leave the tap running the whole night and when I told them about the water scarcity in the world , they were amazed.
I interviewed a person called Mrs. Kesenia ,who is our family friend. She said that she never saw any water bills and she did not pay anything for the water that she got in her taps. She also did not know where her water comes from and where it went. Bad isn't it?

I researched about how floods and droughts happen. In Australia we have lots of droughts.

In our field trip to a native village I had learnt about how those people were trying to conserve water by a method where the pipes collected water from the roof tops and carried it to rain tanks under the ground to be used later by them. They saved a lot of water. It was fascinating.
I wish people all over the world could find such solutions for our water problems.

those with everything pay nothing and with nothing pay everything

water is so important. I finally realised that when we learned about water - not just about oceans and the water cycle but about how most of this earth is suffering from water shortage. For us water is a everyday resourcebut for them it's a precious thing as a jewel. I was shocked and surprised about the water shortage in the world . I had thought the world had plenty of water but I learnt soon that just 3% of the planet's water is fresh and out of that only 1% is easy for us to find and use. The remaining 2% is locked in icebergs and glaciers or is underground water.

I really feel sorry for the poor because of the fact that they pay more than us for so little water .
I asked my dad about our water bill and he told me we pay very very little for using so much. We have 8 toilets in our house and almost 20 taps with water coming in them all 24 hours.

I have managed to teach my little 5 year old brother not to waste water anymore and he seems to have understood.

TAKING RISKS IN LIFE

Taking part in the teacher's dance on Indus Day was such a great experience. I had not in my wildest dreams expected people( parents, students and teachers) to walk up to me and congratulate me on my performance . A few parents even sent me notes saying how much they enjoyed the dance.
I was thrilled and one of my goals in the coming years is to take more risks and try my hand at new things.

Happenings in Grade 4

Teaching Grade 4 students this year has been one of the most exciting and enriching experience in my entire teaching career. They have been a wonderful, intelligent and lively batch who always wanted to learn more and more. It's been my privelege to have been the grade teacher OF SUCH ENTHUSIASTIC kids .
Together we've done great things this year -some excellent end of unit celebrations, excellent results and excellent learning .

Way to go Grade 4!
