The Science Exhibition

On Wednesday 26 February 2008, we had the first day of the science exhibition after so much hard work.
Our topic was “Space”. I was to talk about the presentation that my father made for grade 5. The evening before, I asked my dad how to present it the way he did. So he thought me.

We were preparing in the morning and after lunch, we went to see other classes. I first went to my brother’s class (grade 1). Their topic was about light. My brother spoke about the reflection of light. Then we went to see grade 2. Their topic was about chemical experiences. After grade 2 finished their presentation, they all sang a song to us. We then went to grade 3, then 4 and finally it was our turn. Everybody in grade 5 was exited, including me. All the other grades came to watch our presentation. Each time when my turn came, I tried to explain my PPT as interesting as possible. Not many people came to our class because most of them were too young to understand.

The day ended and we just waited till tomorrow comes. Tomorrow came and I was so exited that the energy in me wanted to pop out. Today was the 2nd day of the science exhibition. The day for parents to come. The parents came from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. My throat started hurting from 11 o’clock, because I talked to lots of parents. Luckily it was the time when break started, so I went out, drank water, and ate my snack. So my throat felt better. Then my mum came at 11:45. I talked to her in my best voice and in the most interesting way I could talk because I didn’t want her to be disappointed with me. Time went on fast and soon, science exhibition was over. I was really proud of myself.
It was over and my brother took pictures of me, my friends and Ms. Poonam. I went home feeling proud and happy.

Our Science Exhibition

On the 27th and 28th there was a science exhibition. In the science exhibition grade 5 was doing space. We were preparing for days.On the 27th all the children of the PYP came. The younger kids didn't understand much.We also saw the other grades. Grade 1 did light. Grade 2 did chemical reactions. I didn't get to see grades 3&4 though. On the 28th all the parents came to see. The classroom was fully decorated and looked awesome. Everybody had some sort of project to work on. In the morning everyone was excited but later we were exhausted from saying the same lines over and over again. I was doing the ISS (International Space Station) and had made a model. It was very fun but boring after saying everything again after 1 or 2 times. It was really tiring and I felt very thirsty and my troat was dry , but after I spoke they said that I spoke very good. The full class was so busy in their work. Everything went well and everyone enjoyed. I felt really proud for speaking so much and very confident. When I went home I felt proud and very happy and a bit tired. I think grade 5a did a great job just like they always do. GO GRADE 5A!!!!!!!!!!!!!

preparing for the science exhibition (a big day!!)

on the 27th and 28th we will have our science exhibition. as our current uoi topic is space, and that is to do with science, we will be doing this for the science exhibition. megha and i are doing how astronauts live and work in space. it is a fun topic because i found out so many things which were gross and funny! ms. poonam is only giving us the hw: work on science project seriously and it is all we are doing in class these days models lines, charts , EVERYTHING!!!!!! it is fun but frustarating sometimes. megha and i planned a model but when we were making it the model turned out different and it was way difficult to make that thing! we, as the great 5Aers have to a good job cause everyone expects so much from us!!! (cuz we're great of course!!) we are going to decorate the classroom completly whith our work, models, charts and black chart paper and i think its gonna look great!!! go 5A!!!!

Our Field Trip

Grade 5 went on a field trip on the 19th of February to the Vishvashwariya Museum and to the Nehru Planetarium. First we went to the museum and had lots of fun. We saw rockets, satellites, models, experiments, projects and lots more. We learnt about the mission control and played lots of quizzes. We also got to weigh ourselves on different planets. Then we went to the Nehru Planetarium and saw a show. The show told us about the different planets and about our universe. It was really cool because the stars were shining and the pictures kept popping up and looked really nice. We knew most of it becuase Ms.Poonam taught us so much about space.I learnt alot on our field trip and had loads of fun.

Our field trip

Grade went on a field trip to the Vishweswaria Museum then to the Planetarium.
In the museum, we saw many fun experiments. We saw a ball trapped in an invisible box and flying because of the strong air, a magnet in the water that can be moved by another magnet outside, a jet-flying airplane, satellites orbiting a globe, models of satellites, news paper about space, how much we weigh on each planet in the solar system, we answered quizzes from computers, ourselves on TV and win in games from there, and MUCH MUCH more.
Then we had lunch and went to the Planetarium. We saw a movie about space. Most of it was about what we already know but some parts were knew for me like, the planets are leftovers from the Nebula that formed the sun, people thought that the Earth was in the middle of our solar system, and MUCH MUCH more. Then we went back to school and took the bus to go home. I had so much fun today with my classmates.

our feild trip to vishawarya mueseum and nehru planetariom

today gr5 went on a field trip. the bus ride was fun and everyone was singing and exchanging snacks and secrets. me and ruchi made up a funny song to sing and i kept laughing while singing it. it was pretty far away and we finally got to the mueseum. there we learnt about different things in space (personally i think ms.poonam is taught us much more than the mueseum!) after that we had lunch and went to the planetariam. over there we had to wait for the show and played outside. the inside was decent but we had to wait alot they probaly had some technical difficulties. during that time me and ruchi talked alot. it was a nice show about the solar system and was interesting. after that we went back to school and everyone was just as wild as the first ride.the teachers got strickter and did not let us run around, but they bought us icecream! when we reached school there was 1 hour left to go home so we played in the sports complex. overall it was a pretty fun day.

what i learnt about satellites

today ana's dad who works in ISRO came to talk to us about satellites. he had made a great PPT presantation which i learnt alot from. mr.choi started with some cool images from google earth inwhich we found out where indus international school was in the whole universe it was amazing! the pictures were amazing and so accurate! everyone started clapping for no apperant reason.after that mr.choi explained about how we use satellites in our daily lives for satellite comunication, navigation, observation etc. and showed us a cool video about this. we also learnt about where satellites are positioned in space and where different satellites are from the earth. i think he explained very nicely and i learnt alot about satellites today in an interesting way.

gr5 assembly about space

Today we had an assembly about space. First Nihal said some words. Then we started of with a funny play about all the planets and the sun gathering for a meeting. Adrianne, Megha and Nicolas introduced and concluded it.All the planets were describing their problems and grumbling except earth. The characters were……
1. Sun- Zoish
2. Mercury- Alex
3. Venus- Shreya
4. Earth- Ruchi
5. Mars- Sacha
6. Jupiter- Hugo
7. Saturn- Nihal
8. Uranus- Tejaswini
9. Neptune- Nayantara
10. Pluto- Karan
I think the play was good! The people who didn’t get roles got to be humans or were given speaking roles. After that was Ana was speaking about the technological advancements in space exploration. They were all written by me!!!! I was next with benefits of space exploration. I made a PPT on this with pictures so it would be easier to understand what I was saying. After me the 5B kids took care of the show. They had something planning a mission to Saturn and a presentation about the moon. No offence to 5B but I think our part of the show was better.

advancements in space exploration

Humans have gone very far in space exploration.
ü Before humans could only look up there and admire the sky. Now we are building hotels outside Earth!
ü First humans had to take loads of food with them to space. Now astronauts can remain healthy with one tiny capsule!
ü First astronauts just spent a few minutes in space. Now they spend months there!
ü Before it was just animals and robots that went into space because humans were not brave enough. Now humans are sure of what they are doing and they go up.
ü First the space suits and oxygen supplies were not so good so we could not stay in space for very long. Now are equipment is so good we stay in space for long periods without dying or something.
ü First the space ships could only be used once and than thrown away wasting lots of hard-earned money. Now we can use them over and over again.
ü Before space travel was really risky. Now nobody is really scared of space travel.
ü Before people thought the sun orbited the earth. Now we know that all planets in the solar system orbit our sun.
ü First nobody new about the other planets. Now we know all about them.
ü First the telescopes were not to strong and you hardly could see anything clearly because of the atmosphere. Now we can see other galaxies with the Hubble space telescope.
ü First it was just USA and Russia in the space race. Now its all kinds of countries working together.
There are so many advances we have made in space exploration!

interesting news about space

Everyday we bring in news about space there are so many interesting new things we learn which we cannot find in the class library books because they were printed around three years back and does not have the latest space news. Here is some interesting space news I have learned about so far…
Þ Mercury is shrinking! Scientists have proved this because of the creases on the surface. I think that it is weird because the universe is expanding not decreasing. Maybe if Mercury gets any smaller it would have to be declared not a planet just like Pluto!
Þ India is sending a lunar module to the moon called the ‘Chandrayann1’which will orbit the moon for a while and then land on it. It will launch around April this year.
Þ China is sending a space craft too. It is called ‘chang1’. I am glad that now it is not only countries like Russia and USA sending things to space, now even developing countries like India.
Þ Mysterious metallic Mercury actually has ice! According to me Mercury is a weird planet.
Þ There was an asteroid that flew past earth recently. Another asteroid that just passed Mars might hit earth!
Þ An American spy satellite might hit the Earth. It is most likely to hit an ocean. I hope it doesn’t cause any damage!
Þ A weird woman was found on Mars. Later I found out it was just a rock.
Þ People start planning, designing and building the Virgin Galactic. The world’s first commercial space craft!
I hope I find out more interesting news like this!

Benefits of Space Exploration
By Rhea Aurora

There are many benefits to space exploration. Findings and advances in space technology have had an amazing effect on things back on earth. For example,
Þ They are finding out cures for cancer patients.
Þ People who don’t want glasses but can not see without them can use contact lenses.
Þ Can make operations less painful with lasers so they don’t have to cut up the whole body when they are only fixing one part.
Þ Big advancements in the medical fields.
Þ We will have extremely accurate clocks which will even tell you the .0000000000000001 of a second!
Þ Computer barcodes, alarm systems, smoke detectors and other safety devices had first been used with NASA technology.
Þ Some experiments are easier to do in space then on earth so scientists do them there discovering both what they wanted to know and some other new awesome facts.
Þ We might not even have our favorite videogames!
Þ Some special material discovered in space is used for sports equipment like tennis rackets.
Þ Some great strong, light-weight fabric material is so sturdy it can be used for so many things from building to clothes to blankets.
Some people wonder if it is worth all that money to go up there. I think it is because we are finding so much! We can’t just stay in our cradle (earth) forever. We need to get out and explore the amazing things beyond our earth. In my opinion space exploration is very important and we should continue space exploration.
